M-codes are the options codes that tell the manufacturer/factory what equipment should be installed, what the paint and top colors should be, and so on.
Build Sheet
In order determine your Cabriolet's options codes, you will first need to locate the build sheet: It is a white, square sticker affixed to the crossbar inside the trunk. The car came with two of these stickers; one remained on the crossbar, while the other was to be removed from the trunk and affixed to a page inside the maintenance booklet.
Deciphering the build sheet:
The Type (no. 4 in the sample above): 155 = Golf I Cabriolet/Rabbit Convertible in left-hand drive; 154 = Golf I Cabriolet in right-hand drive. The trailing 3-digit number (544 in the example above) is in reference to your specific car's equipment (engine, transmission) for a given production period.
